Hazard-Less Chelsea Review!!!

Chelsea FC have started their campaign in not the way they would have liked to. With Eden Hazard moving to Spain in the summer and an enforced transfer ban on the club, Chelsea wasn’t able to buy any replacement or should we say weren’t able to strengthen the team.

Although a new arrival was to be welcomed, Christian Pulisic, who was signed in January 2019. Chelsea also exercised their option to permanently sign Mateo Kovacic. Pulisic is the only new major player to come into the squad this season. David Luiz and Garry Cahill both have left the club this summer and Chelsea might have gone in the market looking for a new Center Back.

With the new season already underway Chelsea are still waiting for number of first team players to comeback from the injuries. With the likes of N’Golo Kanté, Pedro, Antonio Rudiger, Ruben Loftus Cheek and Callum Hudson Odoi all out injured, we are struggling to finish games. Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham are two Academy players which have come into Frank’s first team and have made quite a mark for themselves. With already 4 games gone Mount (2 goals) and Tammy (4 goals) are the only players to score for Chelsea this season until now. Two other Academy players have also been involved in the first team, Fikayo Tomori with one start and Billy Gilmour coming on as a substitute against Sheffield United. Fikayo Tomori gave a very strong performance in his first ever Premier League start. Frank hopes Kante, Pedro, Rudiger and Callum will be back after the international break so the team will look more stable on paper as well will be able to get through games more easily. Chelsea do have some serious talent and still a very good squad to fight for top 4 place in the premier league.

UEFA Champions League groups for this season are also decided with Chelsea having to face a relatively tough group. Ajax, Lille OSC and Valencia are drawn with Chelsea in Group H. Some of the players has to step-up their games because now the season has well and truly started. Pulisic had a very good match against Liverpool in UEFA Super Cup final and has 2 assist in the Premier league but yet to score a goal. Chelsea have been good in attack this season until now and goals can start to come at anytime for Pulisic. Mason Mount has been a stand out player with 2 goals and creating chances for others too but Tammy has now scored 4 goals with couple of brace in his last two consecutive games. Tammy has impressed everyone with his great movement off the ball. Mount impressive performance have earned him an international call-up for EURO 2020 qualifiers. Chelsea (currently at 11th in the league with 5 points) are sure without Eden Hazard but still looks a quality team with Academy players stepping up and making mark for themselves. With our squad fully fit we can be very strong team and here is my look at our starting line-up options –

(Lightly marked players are second choice)

This squad on paper sure looks more than decent and can compete for the top 4. Some might argue Azpilicueta‘s place but we haven’t seen Reece play yet so we can’t make assumptions that he will give us world class performance from the word go. Ruben Loftus Cheek, for me, will get straight into the squad. He was in red hot form in second half of the season. On other hand Hudson-Odoi might have to fight his way back into the first team with Pedro also coming back. Pedro was our best player before his injury this season, he was chasing down everything and was showing fight for every ball on the pitch. It has been a great start for Tammy as well and he also has trust of the manager and he looks to be our main man this season and many more seasons to come in the future. While Kante, Jorginho and Mount are hard to be beaten of their places in the starting line-up so Kovacic and Barkley should look to make a mark when given chances. Antonio should be our main center back with Christensen but Tomori and Zouma are not far from them. And lastly Alonso has clearly lot his place and does not look like he will be getting back in soon. Hope Chelsea get into a rhythm of winning matches soon. Our next match is on 14th September against Wolves. It is going to be tough match as Wolves are hard to break down.
