Hey Chelsea fans! How’s it going? I hope eveyone had a great new year and with Chelsea finally winning a game at home after a long time might have made your start to the year more joyous.
As everyone might be aware, the winter transfer window is open & the transfer ban was also lifted on Chelsea. So the fans have made it quite clear the players they want to see in the Chelsea colours as soon as possible. Jadon Sancho, Ben Chilwell & Timo Wernerare clearly the crowd favorites, although they all might be hard to get in this winter. But before going into the transfer market we should look at which areas are really needed to be strengthen. AS the season has gone so far we ahve looked naive at the look and must clearly at the left back position. Keeping in mind the situation we are in I have mentioned few players Chelsea should really go for and don’t just go after big names right now. Let us start from the back :-
Do we need a back-up to Kepa? Kepa sometimes this season has looked vulnerable and his positioning has been a major questionable thing. A goal conceded agianst Ajax from Ziyech’s cross/shot in the UEFA Champions League is the most pointed out goal. But Kepa’s performance hasn’t been all that bad as many may think. He is 25 and is still very young and his recent performance against Brighton saved us a point. He made 2 big saves in that match but was helpless when Alireza Jahanbakhsh scored from a tremendous bicycle kick. An overall a very good & an exceptional performance by Kepa in that game. But do we really need a back-up to him? I don’t really think so. Willy Cabellero, a very good keeper, too & has always stepped-up to the occasion when called upon, be it last season after the Kepa-Sarri situation or be his cup performances . I don’t think we should be looking for any keeper as of now and keep faith in both of our goalkeepers.
Tomori & Zouma have been mostly our Centre-back pairing this season. But this is Tomori’s first ever season in the top flight and have looked naive occasionaly. Zouma has been an ever present in the first team but still has some questions from the fans to be answered. Rudiger has from the same as ever after returning from the injury. He has been restored straight back into the team in place of Tomori. Christensen & Tomori are very young too & have given an impressive performances to the team but fans still think we need a strong personality at the Centre-back position. Kalidou Koulibaly has been fans main man but is he the main man now? Personally, NO! I think Chelsea will also not spend £80m+ on the 28 year old now. Instead we should be looking for maybe a bit cheaper & younger option and I think Milan Skriniar is the player to go for. Market value of Milan Skriniar is £54m as mentioned on transfermarkt. He is still 24 year old and has a very strong build & personality. He can be a major signing for us and help us in few of our defensive issues.
Both Marcus Alonso & Emerson have never convinced the manager & the fans as well. Both have been a bit out of sorts as the season have progressed. Lampard happen to have shifted Azpilicueta into the left back position recently. But we should be looking into the market more actively for a left back this winter. Although we have seen Ian Maatsen & more recently Tariq Lamptey perform very well. Laptey impressed more than any other player with his excellent performance against Arsenal. Fans have voiced thier love after Ben Chilwell, but Leicester will not be looking to cash-in for him. Chelsea should be looking ath an alternative players, one such as Aaron Martin of FSV Mainz 05. He is 22 year old with a market value of £18m. Although he might also be difficult to get this season as he only joined Mainz in this summer. But buying one of these two this winter might make us stable at the back.
A lot of fan have raised their voices for the Club to get Jadon Sancho. No doubt he is an exceptional player but would also come for a hefty price tag. But running after him and spending big in winter can turn out to be a questionable signing as of now we have abundance of talent in the midfield with Ruben Loftus Cheek also coming close to making a comeback. Callum Hudson-Odoi, Pedro, Willian & Pulisic are our main attacking winger options and Willian has been in an impressive form of late which has made him a first choice on the team sheet every week. Pulisic has made start stop performances but being his first season in the Premier League he has shown he is here to stay and has been adapting to the things quickly. Reminder : Pulisic didn’t have a summer break this season due to USA’s involvement in CONCACAF Gold Cup. And this is the first time he is neither having a winter break as he was used to in Bundesliga, so we shouldn’t be heard on him & look to support him through his first season in the Premier League. There are rumours for Zaha as well which I feel can be a good move but If I have to make a choice on this I would rather say no to this move as of now. We have immense talent at our club, some at loan as well which include Mario Pasalic. He has been the stand-out this season out of our loan army. He has been making & scoring goals at Atalanta in the Serie A. If the club is too desperate and eager to buy a midfielder, even after having the likes of Kante, Jorghino, Mount, Kovacic, Ruben and Barkley, then club should instead call back Pasalic from Atalanta. He can play on the wings & usually starts on the left side for Atalanta.
This position on the pitch has been most impressive for Chelsea this season. Tammy has taken responsibility very nicely and has shown consistency in his form & performances. Now with lack of game time, Olivier Giroud, has made his intentions somewhat clear & he does wants out. Giroud could walk out this month and Chelsea will be left with Michy as the only back-up. Michy is a good striker and his numbers for national team speaks volumes (16 goals in 29 games), but we should & are looking for another option to support & challenge Tammy. But again the main question is that are we too desperate for another striker this winter? Answer to this I think is NO! Again! Timo Werner is the player which fans really want. I raised my voice to buy him two seasons back i.e. 2017 summer & 2018 winter. Now he will cost a handful amount of money. I have marked out 2 strikers who could not only be potential back-ups but also can be good when called upon. Chelsea should really consider one out of the Max Kruse (31 age) & Josep Illic (31 age) because they have experience and are known for good attacking returns. Both would be available for a cheap price. Market value of Max is listed as €10.50m by transfermarkt, similarly, Illic is valued at €15.00m by transfermarkt. I think we don’t need any major changes this winter but I really want Chelsea to consider buying Milan Skriniar and should be looking to buy him before it’s too late.
